Chalk Talk

Last Updated: November 18, 2025

Overview

Chalk Talk enables coaches to provide visual and verbal instruction to players without needing to meet in person. It lets you draw directly on top of game film and record your voice as you explain concepts. The system overlays a drawing canvas on the video and captures your annotations and audio as a single recording, which you can download or share with players for asynchronous review.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open any film in the WatchGameFilm player.

  2. Tap or click the Chalk Talk button to enable drawing mode.

  3. Use your mouse, stylus, or finger (on touch devices) to draw directly on top of the video.

  4. If you want to include audio and create a full coaching clip, click Start Recording.

  5. Speak normally and use drawing tools to visually illustrate your teaching.

  6. When finished, click Stop Recording to generate your annotated video with audio.

  7. Download or share your Chalk Talk recording with your players.

  8. The Chalk Talk is automatically placed in your film for viewing under the Chalk Talk Dropdown

FAQs

Why can’t I draw on the video?

Chalk Talk must be turned on before drawing is available. If you recently entered fullscreen mode, the drawing layer may take a moment to adjust—wait briefly and try again. On some mobile devices, certain touch gestures may be interpreted as scrolling instead of drawing, so try using a single finger.

Why did my drawings disappear when I turned off Chalk Talk?

Turning off Chalk Talk clears the drawing layer. This is expected behavior so each session starts with a clean surface.

Why does drawing look misaligned right after switching to fullscreen?

When entering or exiting fullscreen, the video adjusts size. The drawing layer adjusts with it, which may take a moment. Wait briefly before drawing to ensure everything is aligned.

Why do I need to allow microphone access for recording?

If you choose to record your Chalk Talk session, your microphone must be enabled so your voice can be included. If microphone access is blocked, recording will not capture audio.

What format is the Chalk Talk recording saved in?

Chalk Talk recordings are saved as .webm video files, which can be viewed on most modern devices or converted if needed.
